Swarachakra Asomiya (স্বৰচক্ৰ অসমীয়া) is a touchscreen keyboard designed for typing in Assamese. This application is also available in various Indian languages, including Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Odia, Punjabi, Konkani, Bengali, and Tamil. Swarachakra employs a logical arrangement based on the Assamese script's structure. It presents consonants in a sequence rooted in linguistic principles, organized phonetically and displayed in a grid akin to that found in educational textbooks.

Typing with Swarachakra

When typing in Assamese, users often need to input combinations of a consonant (ধ) and a matra (ো)—for example, ধ + ো = ধো. Upon selecting a consonant, a chakra emerges showcasing combinations of the consonant with ten frequently used matras (ধা, ধি, ধী, ধু, ধূ, ধে, ধৈ, ধো, ধৌ..). Users can slide their stylus or finger to select the desired character combination.

Typing conjuncts, such as ক্রি, ষ্থ, চ্য়, poses challenges for many. However, Swarachakra simplifies this process. Initially tap the first part of the combination and select the halant from the chakra (স + ्). Swarachakra then presents previews of all possible conjuncts beginning with that consonant (স + ् + থ = স্থ; চ + ् + য় = চ্য়, etc.). Adding a matra follows the same procedure as before (স্থি, স্থী, স্থু , স্থূ ...).

For typing specific characters like a rafar (র্থ) or a rashtrachinha (ত্র) or a nukta (ড়, খ়), simply select the appropriate key from the keys at the bottom right corner and proceed with standard typing. Complete vowels (অ আ ই ঈ উ ঊ এ ঐ ও ঔ) are accessible in a separate chakra located at the bottom right. Vowels and matras that are less frequently used are adjacent to this section (ঽ ৎ ৃ ঋৄ ৄ ৠ ৢ ঌ ৣ ৡ). For numerals and symbols along with rarely used characters, users may access them through a shift function. Additionally, there is an option to temporarily switch to a QWERTY keyboard for English input.

Installing Swarachakra

The installation of Swarachakra Asomiya begins by clicking the “Install” button provided above. Subsequently, it is essential to enable the keyboard by navigating to “Settings,” selecting “Language and Input,” and checking the box next to স্বৰচক্ৰ অসমীয়া. Finally, select Swarachakra Asomiya as the default keyboard in the “Keyboard and input methods” section.
